We’ll Just Use the Force of Music: Review of How the Force Works

When I was a kid, I always went to sleep with the radio on.  Back then, it was the smooth sounds of an 80s synthesizer.  And today, quite often playing in the soundtrack of my routine, are the themes and motifs of Star Wars cinematic scores, of course.  When we were leaving The Force Awakens, I was absentmindedly humming Rey’s Theme, because it seemed unique and grabbed my attention.  And I am not educated in music at all.

We are now blessed with Full of Sith's How the Force Works - Episodes I-III.  This highly recommended podcast miniseries, which breaks down the music of Star Wars: The Last Jedi is astonishingly powerful.  To come to a deeper understanding of the music, for several years we were treated to the likes of Rebel Force Radio's Star Wars Oxygen: The Music of John Williams.  And now, with the arrival of this new and wonderful miniseries of podcasts, the music of the great maestro and The Last Jedi is brought to life.

Bobby Roberts has been a favorite podcast voice of mine for several years.  I really get and appreciate his style, his unabashed yet thoughtful commentary and insight.  His Rumor Control on Full of Sith was amazing.  I had never entertained spoilers before, but was sucked in to his common sense analysis.  His work enlightens my own fandom.

In this commentary series, he brings together his vast pop culture awareness, love for the content and tremendous research skills.  I gobbled up these podcasts as fast I could, and will do so again.  I highly recommend that this series get at least two listens from everyone. We can not let these pristine episodes disappear into the cacophonous glut of obscurity.

His layman’s approach to the music is anything but rudimentary.  This content calls together music from across the vast saga, and enlightening the ways in which particular movements create mood and drama.  By delving into our own psyche, preconceptions of society and these beloved movies, we find through Bobby Roberts’ deft analysis a multiple strata of appreciation for the latest soul-feast, which is The Last Jedi.
